Precious Remedies Against Satans Devices, Or Salve For Believers & Unbelievers, Sores

Pp. xvi, title page & epistle, [xv a word to the reader], 376, [16 - a table]. Early handwriting on verso of title and other blank pages, some underlining and annotations in text and on four sides of endpapers at back of book. 19th Century half roan.  Brookes (1608-1680), preacher to the House of Commons from 1648, was controversial in opposing the Act of Uniformity regarding using the Book of Common Prayer. This time-honoured Puritan classic is still used today to provide "lessons on the subtleties of Satan's devices". It was first published in 1652 and went through many editions.  A good and interestingly annotated copy of this rare and widely referred to work.
