Author(s): William Swainson

Early New Zealand

New Zealand and its Colonization

pp.viii,416, folding col. map. Original red decorated cloth boards. Presentation copy to Col. Smyth signed by the author. Book plate of previous owner.   NZNB 5430 Swainson (1809-1884) arrived in Auckland in 1841 and was involved in politics and land rights through to his death, becoming Speaker of the Legislative Council in 1854,  and working with both Governor Grey and Bishop Selwyn. The book is a valuable source of early information,  informed by Swainson's first hand accounts of the development of the colony, Maori, land settlements and the New Zealand Company. Good copy with an interesting map of New Zealand showing the colonies
