The Art of Prudence; or A Companion For A Man Of Sense.

Lacks title page, pp [26], 280, (16 - Catalogue of books, printed for, and sold by Mears). Original calf, panelled boards neatly re-cased with original label. Appears to be the 3rd edition in English translated by Savage of the Spanish edition, thus 1714, though the Book Catalogue in the back added and bound in, in this calf binding in 1722. Gracian (1605-1658) was a Spanish Jesuit writer and philosopher. The original work Oráculo Manual y Arte de Prudencia comprises 300 maxims with commentary and has been translated many times, as recently as 1992, also attracting the admiring attention of the philosophers Schopenhauer and Neitzsche. An important and popular work guiding the appearance, manner and demeanour of a prudent man. Very nice copy in full panel contemporary, neatly recased calf  boards.
