A Treatise Touching The Libertie of a Christian. Written In Latine By Doctor Martin Luther. And Translated Into English By James Bell.

pp. [15 - Epistle to the Pope], 2-46 (A Treatise), complete. Original full roan, bottom edge trimmed with minor loss (mainly page numbers). Minor fault at base of spine. Pale staining at top margins of some pages. This is a 1636 edition (first published in 1579) of Bell's translation of a Latin version of: Von der Freiheit eines Christenmenschen. It comprises Bell's dedication to the Countess of Warwick, Luther's letter to Pope Leo X written from Wittenberg, dated  6 Sept. 1520, and the Treatise. There was an earlier translation by John Tewkesbury printed by John Byddell before 1544.  The letter and Treatise were part of Luther's continuing struggle with the Papacy, although there is doubt whether Pope Leo ever received it.  An attractive copy of this rare and important work.
