THE PRACTICE OF PRIESTHOOD

The Practice of Priesthood is an occasional series of books by, or about, priests who are currently in ministry and who have been inspired by their practical experience to reflect on or to raise issues and questions about their role and the role of the Church at the end of the second millenium.

What are we at?

Ministry and Priesthood for the Third Millenium

Michael Casey

What are the struggles of being a priest today? Why is there a crisis? Why is there confusion about the role of the priest? Why does the Church seem to be losing contact with the lives of the plain people?

Do our Church thinking and structures come in the way of the gospel today? Must we make a new beginning, as John Paul II said in Knock in 1979?

Here is one priest's story of his struggles with the credibility gap between 'the Church' and the real world of today and his suggestions for rethinking and reforming ministry and priesthood at the beginning of the Third Millenium.

Fr Michael Casey has been a priest for twenty-five years and has served in parishes both comfortable and deprived. Recently he took time off to go away to study and reflect on his experiences, hoping to suggest ways and means of adaptation in the Church so that it might more adequately respond to the needs of the people of the modern world.
